In memoriam: Professor Andrej Banić

Professor Andrej Banic was born and went to medical school in Ljubljana, Slovenia and obtained a PhD from Linkjöping University in Sweden. In the late seventies and early eighties he worked in the renownedUniversity Department forPlastic Surgery and Burns, University Clinical Centre, Ljubljana where, together with Marko Godina, he developed and shaped the concepts of microsurgical reconstruction that would influence generations of microsurgeons. After taking on the position of Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Kuwait University he moved to the Inselspital in Bern,Switzerlandin 1989 where he received his“venia docendi” in 1993 and his Professor title in 1997. He became the Head of the Departement of Plastic Surgery at the Inselspital, University of Bern in 2000, positionhe helduntil his emeritation in 2013. Professor Banic was a shaping force of European and worldwide reconstructive microsurgery as president and treasurer of EBOPRAS, EURAPS and a leading member of the WSRM. Throughout his career Andrej Banic has envisioned and refined the use of microsurgery techniques especially for lower extremity and oncologic reconstruction and developed essential concepts like immediate microsurgical reconstruction of the extensive lower extremity traumatic injury that we still follow today.
